WASH/Waste Focal Person – Uganda Red Cross Society

Job summary:
The role of the Waste Management Focal Person will be to support the operationalization of a comprehensive waste management system thereby minimizing waste hazards through recycling and reuse opportunities. The role includes establishing and defining the waste management objectives and goals of the National Society at the Waste Management Centre, working with staff/volunteers to help implement policies of waste disposal, and evaluating the actual success of waste management plans following implementation. The Waste Management Focal Person play a vital role in protecting the environment and minimizing the impact of waste disposal and handling processes and should have an interest in the environment and an awareness of current and future sustainability issues. The position holder with support from the URCS WASH Project Manager, Coordinator, Austrian Red Cross WASH Delegates and key relevant external stakeholders will be required to implement the proposed set of activities for improved WASH/Waste services delivery at Waste Management Centre within Imvepi Refugee settlement and host communities of Arua District.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
· Support project implementation and accountability including adherence to specific procedures, financial methods, and related costs pertaining to waste management services and environmental compliance.
· Overseeing the collection, storage and disposal of waste (including hazardous waste).
· Ensuring national, state/local and environmental standards are met and adhered to.
· Educating and informing staff & volunteers on various waste management practices.
· Coordinating and planning waste recycling and managing sub projects like briquette making, plastics recycling, metals etc.
· Applying an efficient waste hierarchy model and evaluating waste management options to reuse, reduce, recover, recycle, and dispose of waste material e.g. Briquette Making, Composting, sludge cakes
· Producing appropriate documentation required to track, move, label, and report on waste initiatives and waste management.
· Providing environmentally friendly materials and economical processes, as well as measuring the life cycle of consumable products within an organization.
· Ensuring a relevant level of industry specific knowledge and key developments.
· Provision of training to staff, volunteers and clients.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· The ideal applicant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Water Engineering; Civil engineering, Bio Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field from a reputable institution OR a Diploma in Water Engineering; Civil engineering, Bio Medical Laboratory Technology or a related field from a reputable institution BUT with 3 years’ experience implementing WASH/ Waste
· Should have at least three years of experience in a similar position;
· Specialized training in Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) and PHASE, Faecal Sludge Field Laboratory will be an added advantage;
· Sound training in Faecal Sludge Field Laboratory, Water Resources Management will be an added advantage;
· Knowledge of relevant environmental legislation is beneficial for potential candidates and appropriate experience in environmental or recycling projects is also favourable.
· High level of integrity;
· Very good computer skills (Word, Excel) and ability to run specific software (basic GIS);
· Good initiative and self-motivated individuals to work with minimal supervision efforts.
· Good interpersonal skills and working relations with other staff under his/her supervision and other stakeholders.
· Excellent spoken and written English communication skills; ability to compile and assimilate content in short time frames;
· Proven project management skills, particularly around technical planning, projections and human resource management.
· Ability to work across different actors, cultural contexts, technical areas and bridge silos within the organization and with external partners;
· Strong demonstrated skill working with external partners and bringing several stakeholders together for a common goal, sensitivity to cross cutting aspects of Gender, Environment and disability inclusion;
· A proactive approach to work, the ability to handle multiple tasks and to maintain a high quality standard when working under time pressure;
· A mature personality of high integrity with great team working skills, a courteous attitude and a clear sense of confidentiality;
· An understanding and interest in sustainability and environmental issues
· Ability to prioritize, organize and meet specific deadlines.
