Editor/Proofreader – Kampala – Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa

Background and Context:
The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa – SIHA Network – is a coalition of women rights civil society from Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Somaliland and Uganda. Founded in 1995, SIHA advocates for social change and gender equality in the Horn region and works specifically on protecting women’s human rights, promoting women’s access to justice, supporting economic empowerment and activating women’s political participation. SIHA’s secretariat/HQ is located in Kampala, Uganda and SIHA maintains field offices in Sudan and South Sudan.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:
Contribute to the drafting of a number of SIHA annual publications

Edit, review and supervise the quality assurance of all SIHA published work

Ensure content, spelling, punctuation and accuracy of all print material

Confirm that revised proofs are correct and changes have been made and that text and diagrams are positioned correctly and page numbers are in the proper order

Profile:
The ideal candidate for this position have proven English writing abilities and strong editing and reviewing abilities and is preferably a native English speaker. Impeccable grammar skills, experience in long-form content proofing, extensive knowledge of citation formatting, meticulous attention to detail and an ability to turn projects around on very tight timelines are all preferred characteristics of candidates.

She or he should possess strong networking skills, team work abilities, and cross cultural sensitivity.

The candidate should finally be highly motivated, dynamic and be capable of taking initiative (‘self-starting’) in ensuring the work is effectively done and should possess a strong interest in women and Human Rights in the Horn of Africa Region.

Qualifications, Experience, and Required Competencies:
Applicants of this position should possess a minimum of three years experience in proofreading/editing. Experience working on documentation relating to the Horn of Africa countries in particular is an advantage. SIHA appreciates candidates with abilities to work independently, and those possessing high levels of integrity and commitment to his/her work
